Telegram Two-Step Verification Guide
How Telegram Two-Step Verification adds a password to signing in, where to switch it on, why the recovery e-mail needs protecting, and how a passcode differs.
What Two-Step Verification Adds to Signing In
Signing in to Telegram on a new device normally takes a login code. Telegram sends login codes to the service notifications chat named "Telegram", or by SMS. With Two-Step Verification switched on, the code is no longer enough: signing in needs the login code and the password you chose.
That is the whole idea of the second step. A login code arrives on a device or a phone number, while the password is something only you know. Someone who gets hold of a code still cannot sign in without the password.
Where to Switch It On
Two-Step Verification is switched on under Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. Open that screen, switch the feature on and choose a password. From then on, signing in needs both the login code and that password.
If you have just received an account, set your own password and a recovery e-mail straight away, and follow Telegram's terms of service.
The Recovery E-mail and Why It Needs Protecting Too
A recovery e-mail address can be set up for Two-Step Verification. It helps to regain access if the password is forgotten, so it is worth adding one at the same time as the password.
